Photography with a f1.5 cine lens. What is it like to use a vintage "art" lens on digital cameras?
Переглядів 9 тис.Місяць тому
This is a review of the Dallmeyer “Speed” Anastigmat 1 inch f1.5 cine lens, designed for 16mm cine cameras. I show how simple it is to adapt this vintage lens to today’s digital cameras, and discuss its performance. The lens has a justifiably strong reputation for being an “art” lens, with beautiful rendering, bokeh and fascinating swirls. Here are time links to the different sections of the vi...

The Tair 3S 300mm lens is one of my favourite telephoto lenses on digital cameras. But it’s often overlooked as a lens in its own right, because it’s coupled with one of the most extra-ordinary pieces of camera gear ever sold to the public. I mean... this shouldn't be such a surprise to people. Yes, most modern lenses are technically superior to most vintage lenses in terms of sharpness, bokeh, and color rendering. However, some vintage lenses offer something aesthetic that isn't measured so easily. It's like the difference between a CD and a vinyl record. The CD is superior in almost every way. The vinyl offers a certain aesthetic you don't otherwise get. Ditto with solid state vs tube/valve amplification.

I bought it because most sources did say this lens is surprisingly sharp and that its quality would be more suited for a lense 2, 3 or 5 times its price. "Only chromatic bla bla, well, but besides that". ... Here is the catch. I already have the 7artisans 35mm f/0.95, bothlenses for MFT. And for some reason my 7 manages aboration better, has sharper image quality and so on. But Maybe that's just me imagining things. So I watched some review videos of both lenses back to back and ... the Brightin looks like crap ompared to the 7. But How? In all these "Brighten is the best budget sub f/1 lens" they all had very good quality example images. But seems like the Brighten is just show and not much else. The Brighten looks more expencive but the 7 IS more expencive. The Brightin is a good example of "by cheap, by twice".

My hope has been to find a versatile digital camera for stills and video that will pair well with the Carl Zeiss lenses previously used with my Contax 35mm SLR film camera. After watching this video, it appears that there are plenty of options, which is encouraging. Now comes the task of sorting through the dizzying array of choices. It'll be fun if it doesn't drive me crazy. 😎

Right now I am waiting for a IIIc and and an Elmar F3.5 L39 to be delivered. The lens has the modern aperture settings and from the photograph it seemed to be coated, but I could be wrong. Nice comparison. I have the later f/1.8, which isn't radioactive, and it's a wonderful lens. I do have a question, though. How do you use these on a DSLR? Because of the flange distance, when I adapt mine to my Nikon, I can't focus farther than about 3m. I tried one of the "correcting" adapters, but it both slightly increases the effective FL, and somewhat degrades the optical performance.

It is possible to make on without the donuts. It is also possible to make one with hexagons donuts. The tech is out there in telescopes, however they do not deal with donuts, because everything is to far to focus closer. That said, is clear that the charm of this lens is the donuts. Take a 1/4 bite of a donut for every donut said in the video, drink your preferred non-alcoholic beverage every complete donut eaten. Happy donuting.

Late to the party, but is there a way to ACCELERATE the yellowing of radioactive lenses, and are there adverse effects to doing so? But a good quality old lens will be good! Film look etc are statements made by people who don’t understand how to process a raw file. Use your old lens if it makes you happy.

Great video. I have all versions too. I bought that lamp on your recommendation and successfully deyellowed my SMC. Wow, what a difference!! It's by far the best lens (objectively) out of the bunch. It's more like a Zeiss lens now. The downside is it doesn't have as much character. The yellowed glass evidently affects a lot more than light transmission. My 8 elements version is still my favourite because it is special, but all versions are great. My recommendation would be to buy whichever good condition Takumar is cheapest.

I recently acquired two strange lenses that I had never heard of, a Komura Sankyo Koki 135mm f2.8 in M42, with 15(!) blades, and a Sonagar 135mm f3.5 in Minolta mount with 10 blades. I got them both at a camera club sale, $5 for the Komura and $3 for the Sonagar. The Komura is a bokeh beast, while being very small and lightweight. I have really enjoyed shooting with this lens. It really does rival my Pentacon 135mm f2.8 (Auto MC version). The Sonagar is unremarkable, but it's the best $3 lens I own. I did notice that there seem to be quite a few Sankyo KOHKI lenses out there, but mine is spelled KOKI, which I find odd. I didn't know anything about it when I bought it, although I do own a Komura Komuranon 820 80-200 f4.5 zoom that performs very well, and I assume that the Sankyo Koki is a much older lens. it has been a joy to shoot with.

Great review! Everything you need to know, thank you. I bought the original smc FA 50mm f1.4 this morning for my K5iis. Coming from Fuji, I am enjoying the SLR experience again, but it is jarring to be so sensitive at the wider end for softness, as my modern lenses are simply… sharp. However, I am trying to stretch myself and embrace the soft, as I’m a bit over the optical perfection that is synonymous with current lenses, causing people to spend more on diffusion filters than my lens cost me. I have found in my testing so far that a slight back focus can masquerade as softness, and that when focus is good, the lens is plenty sharp enough.

Didn’t Leica license this lens to Minolta in return for being allowed to use the Rokkor 35-70mm design for the R System?

Thanks. Many years ago I was thinking about buying one of these. When it was still on the market. I always been sorry I didn't.

Hi Simon, Excellent review. So, using it on a FF camera would give you say a ~40mm equivalent view with the darkened corners nipped off?

Yes, I haven’t an accurate mathematical figure for the amount lost due to the darkened corners, but a 40mm equivalent view sounds about right if you take a FF photo.

If this lens is attached to a mirrorless camera, is the camera still mirrorless? 🤔
